4 killed, 29 injured in accident

KANCHEEPURAM: Four persons were killed and 29 others sustained injuries in a road accident involving a bus and light commercial vehicle on Chennai-Bangalore National Highway on Thursday.

According to police, the accident occurred when the State Transport Corporation bus proceeding towards Chennai from Salem rammed into the vehicle laden with empty industrial gas cylinders near Ponniammanpattarai village junction. The driver had halted the vehicle to pick up 25 persons who were proceeding to Sriperumpudur for some contract work at an industrial unit. The deceased were identified as Subramani (25) and Sekar (33), both from Ponniammanpattari, Prema (35) of Manthangal and Selvi (42) of Sirunai village. Of the 29 injured, 13 were referred to Government General Hospital, Chennai, police said. — Staff Reporter

Rs.24.85 lakh seized from air passenger

CHENNAI: The Air Intelligence Unit officials of the Income Tax (Investigation Wing) seized Rs.24.85 lakh from a passenger who arrived here on Monday by an Air Deccan flight from Coimbatore.

According to official sources, the passenger did not provide proper explanation for the source of the money. The denomination of the seized currency were of Rs.1000 and Rs.500. Preliminary enquiries by the IT Department officials revealed that the passenger appeared to be a "carrier" operating from Coimbatore. The name of the passenger was given as S. Muthukaruppan, who had come to Chennai and was on his way to purchase a property in Kancheepuram. — Special Correspondent

Sri Lankan national arrested

CHENNAI: A 26-year-old Sri Lankan national was arrested at the Anna international airport in Chennai on Wednesday.

Airport police said D. Cancious Nidarsan Joseph (26), who was studying in the UK, wanted to visit his parents in Sri Lanka before leaving for Canada. Mr. Joseph landed in Chennai and was about to board a flight to Sri Lanka. The immigration authorities conducted a check and found the Canadian visa was fake. He was then handed over to the airport police who arrested and remanded him to custody.

On Monday last, Bhupindher Singh (27) from Patiala was handed over to the airport police by the immigration authorities after he was found carrying a fake Canadian visa. Bhupindher Singh was about to board a Lufthansa flight. The Airport police remanded him to custody. — Staff Reporter

Plea to Government

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) on Thursday urged the Government to provide Dearness Allowance (DA) to employees of the Khadi and Village Industries Board (KVIB) on a par with government employees.

TNGEA general secretary R. Muthusundaram said in a statement here that the KVIB employees had been provided with DA which was 15 per cent lesser than that of the government employees. There had been delayed disbursement of loans from the General Provident Fund (GPF) to the KVIB employees on the ground of paucity of funds, he added. — Special Correspondent

Farmer hacked to death

NAMAKKAL: A farmer was hacked to death at Mallasamudram on Wednesday.

Police said Palaniyappa Goundar (70) of Karummanur Goundampalayam was working in the field when an unidentified person murdered him. Police registered a case.

SALEM: Gnanasekar (25), an autorickshaw driver drowned in Erumapalayam lake here on Wednesday. He was taking bath when the incident took place. Neighbours rescued the body. Police registered a case. - Staff Reporter

Student injured

NAMAKKAL: A student of Government Arts College sustained injuries when a State Transport Corporation town bus hit him here on Thursday. The student, Kaviyarasu, was admitted to the Namakkal Government Hospital. Following this incident, a few persons throw stones and broke the windscreens of the bus. - Staff Reporter

Killed in accident

NAMAKKAL: A one-and half-year-old child was fatally knocked down by a motorcycle in Paramathi Velur on Wednesday.

The child, Maha Vishnu, was playing on the roadside, when the accident took place. Police registered a case.

Life term for murder

Tuticorin: A judicial magistrate court here on Thursday sentenced P Sornapandi (23) to life imprisonment for murdering his half-brother P. Murugan at Srivaikundam.

The accused committed the crime on November 1, 2005, owing to personal dispute.

Mata in Kanyakumari

Nagercoil: Discourse, bhajan, meditation and individual dharsan marked the visit of Mata Amritanandamayi Devi at Pazathottam near Kanyakumari on Thursday. She addressed a public meeting at Pazathottam.

A large number of people from different parts of the district and Kerala were seen in long queue to get the blessing from the Amma.

Seminar classes

Madurai: The Directorate of Distance Education of Madurai Kamaraj University will conduct contact seminar classes for postgraduate first year and M. Phil. courses on February 10 and 11.

According to a press release from the Director, S. Vadivelu, the classes for first year postgraduate course and M. Phil. batch II will be held at Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, Madurai, and M.Phil. course at Nadar Saraswathi Primary School, Theni, and Coronation Girls Higher Secondary School, Sivakasi.

Bomb hurled at Sub-Inspector

Tirunelveli: The police have arrested Rajkumar (27) for allegedly throwing a country bomb at a police official here on Thursday.

According to police sources, he threw a bomb at Sub-Inspector Anbu Prakash while he was standing at Palayamkottai and subsequently attacked the official with deadly weapons.

The official escaped unhurt, sources said.

Power shutdown in Nagercoil

Nagercoil: Power supply will remain suspended in the following areas from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. here on Friday owing to maintenance work to be carried out at Nagercoil sub-station: Paithumal Nagar, Vellatichivilai, Elankadai, Meeran Nagar, Vedanagar and Keelacharalvilai.

Seven Sri Lankan refugees arrive

PUDUKOTTAI: Seven Sri Lankan refugees, including a woman, who arrived at a coastal village in the district on Thursday morning, were later sent to the Mandapam camp.

Official sources said that the refugees were from Jaffna. They were S. Subbuthayi (63), her son S. Aingarai Rooban (31), T. Mohana Lakshmanan (22), Y. Naresh (32), N. Navaneetham (27), K. Ramesh (24) and T. Nagaraj Sekar (37).

The refugees, who landed at Gopalapattinam, informed the police that they left the Island-nation in the wake of growing ethnic problem.

SASTRA professor receives award

THANJAVUR: K.Thenmozhi, Assistant Professor, Shanmugha Arts Science Technology and Research Academy (SASTRA) University here has been awarded the EDI award for her significant contribution in the field of Science and Technology of Radio and TV broadcasting by the Broadcast Engineering Society of India.

The award was presented by David Astley, secretary general, Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union, Malaysia, at the inauguration of the 13th International conference and exhibition on terrestrial and satellite transmission held at New Delhi on February 1.

Phone-in programme

TIRUCHI: All India Radio has arranged for a phone-in programme, `Makkal Medai,' to enable the public and traders to clarify their doubts on commercial tax and value-added tax.

The programme will be broadcast on February 12 at 9.16 p.m. in the main channel during which time the Deputy Commissioner, Commercial Tax, Tiruchi Division, E. Rathinasamy, will answer queries.

The public could call phone number (0431) 2416888 when the programme is broadcast.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 83.90 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
