NEW DELHI: The Union Government has decided to form a "search committee" to select a new Chairman for the leading Navratna company, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) following the scrapping of the appointment of the present incumbent, R.S. Sharma, on Tuesday. The formal announcement of the new "search committee" is expected in the next few days. The choice may not be from the organisation itself, according to highly placed sources. The committee will be authorised to even look for options from the private sector in view of the important role the oil and gas sector is likely to play in the growth of the economy and keeping in mind the growing profile of the company that has taken up major investments projects in India and abroad. "The committee will not restrain anybody from applying for the post and even Mr. Sharma is open to apply afresh for his permanent appointment in the present capacity," a senior official remarked. It is also understood that the Secretary (Petroleum and Natural Gas) and some experts from outside will be part of the new committee.
