Court notice to JNU Vice-Chancellor

Staff Reporter

The process for admission to the M. Phil. course challenged

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notices to the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor and others on a petition by a former student of the University challenging the process for admission to the arts and aesthetics course for M. Phil. for the 2006-07 academic session.

Issuing the notices, Justice B. D. Ahmed also summoned documents pertaining to the entrance examination conducted for admission.

Mr. Justice Ahmed directed the respondents to file their replies by February 20.

The petitioner, Laxman Singh, through his counsel Atulesh Kumar Anant submitted that he had cleared the entrance test for admission last July but the University denied him admission saying he had obtained 30 marks in the written test and just 2 marks in the interview.

The petitioner had obtained the details of his marks by filing an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Mr. Anant submitted.

The petitioner alleged that the admission process was unfair as the University had admitted even those students who were not eligible to take the test.
