VISAKHAPATNAM: Koneru Humpy won the Rs. 1.5 lakh MAYTAS Vizag Challenger Trophy with a game to spare, beating J. Deepan Chakkravarthy in the seventh game of the eight-game contest between the two GMs at the VUDA Children's Theatre here on Thursday.

Humpy secured a winning lead of 4.5 points against Deepan's 2.5 points.

This is the first tournament Humpy is participating in after being selected for the Padma Shri award and she made it doubly sweet by winning a cash prize of Rs. 90,000.

Surprise move

In the crucial seventh encounter, Deepan (black) went for Czech Benoni in a bid to surprise Humpy. But, she sprang a surprise on him when she came up with h4 in her 10th move.

Deepan overlooked a knight move on the 15th and lost a pawn. Humpy did not allow this advantage to slip and improved her position slowly and steadily.

She won the game on the 52nd move with an exchange up and with her pawn marching towards promotion. — Special Correspondent
