KOCHI: Vellappally Natesan, general secretary of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam, has urged the State Government to order an investigation into the alleged swindling of monetary offerings received by the Malikappuram melshanthi. In a release here on Thursday, Mr. Natesan suggested that an inquiry by the Vigilance or the Crime Branch could be ordered. S. Sreedharan Potti, father of the "melsanthi" S. Madhusoodanan Potti, had, in a letter to P.K. Narayana Panicker, Nair Service Society (NSS) general secretary, alleged that the money received by his son had been diverted to "a private bank of Mr. Vellappally located at Cherthala." This was done by Saji, who had acted as agent of a former Devaswom Board member. The melsanthi had been told that a bank account had been opened in his and his wife's names, but it could be operated only after a year. (Mr. Natesan sent to newspaper offices copies of Mr. Sreedharan Potti's letter.) Mr. Panicker had forwarded the letter to the Kerala High Court-appointed high-power commission to inquire into the affairs of the Travancore Devaswom Board, headed by the former judge K.S. Paripoornan. Mr. Natesan and the Yogam criticised this act of the NSS leadership. The letter provoked a standoff between these two community organisations. The Yogam took out a march to the NSS headquarters at Changanassery, which was condemned by society.
