Kochi: The Kerala High Court, on Thursday, admitted two writ petitions challenging the Dewaswom ordinance. While one petition was filed by the former Cochin Devaswom Board president and member M.A. Krishnanunni and A.V. Velayuthan, respectively, another one was by a devotee, Jayaprakash Narayanan of Kottayam. Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan, however, declined the pleas of Mr. Krishnanunni and the former member to stay the ordinance. The ordinance reduced the terms of the office of the members by amending the Travancore Cochin Hindu Religions Institutions Act, leading to the dissolution of the Travancore and Cochin Devaswom Boards. The petitioners alleged that by issuing the ordinance, the Government had virtually taken over the administration of the two boards. It was brought without giving notice to the president and the members of the boards. The judge stayed the Government Order in so far as it prohibits the production, storage, distribution and transportation of plastic bottles, carry bags and cups with thickness of above 30 microns. The interim order was passed on a writ petition filed by the All-Kerala Plastic Dealers' Association. The judge also ordered that the clause in the order regarding the thickness of the plastic material should be read as 30 microns. All persons who had plastic material such as carry bags with a thickness of less than 30 microns should dispose them of within two weeks.
Petition dismissed
Justice K. Balakrishnan Nair dismissed a writ petition filed by a wholesale lottery dealer of Arunachal Pradesh seeking registration to sell paper lottery tickets of the Arunachal Pradesh Government. The judge said that registration as promoter could not be granted to the petitioner as it was not directly appointed by the Arunachal Pradesh Government.
Salem division
A petition was filed before the court challenging the formation of a new railway division with headquarters at Salem.
