Chandy: Smart City talks lack transparency

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has said that the talks between the State Government and Smart City representatives lack transparency.

Replying to questions at a press conference here on Thursday, Mr. Chandy said the Chief Secretary and other officials concerned were ignorant about the various developments relating to the project that were processed by the Chief Minister's office. Their involvement came only at a later stage.

When he handled the talks with Smart City representatives during his tenure as Chief Minister, all important government Secretaries were involved in the discussions at every stage.

The then Leader of the Opposition (V.S. Achuthanandan) used to be briefed at the end of each day's discussions. Besides, the details used to be posted on the Chief Minister's website for public information. Today, no one was aware of the various conditionalities being discussed, Mr. Chandy said.

Asked for his reaction to the cardinal variations in the conditionalities agreed to during his tenure and the current ones being discussed, Mr. Chandy said he would be able to comment only after getting the full details of the agreement.

UDF convener P.P. Thankachan said the two-hour February 12 Assembly constituency blockade would be reduced to one-hour owing to the apprehension that it would create problems for the common man.
