Bill to stop defacing of heritage zones

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government will pilot a Bill in the next session of the Assembly to prevent defacing of heritage zones with advertisements. Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty said in a release here on Thursday that the Government had received a number of complaints in this regard and hence decided to pilot the Bill. — Special Correspondent

Personal assistants for mayors

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Government has decided to sanction personal assistants for mayors of the five corporations, Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. Keralite found dead in Dubai

Dubai: An Indian national allegedly committed suicide in his room at a labour camp here recently, the police said. Sajikumar, 29, from Thiruvananthapuram district was found dead on Monday evening. He left behind a suicide note stating that there were certain problems in his marital life and expressed apologies to his wife. — PTI

Anthrax scare

THRISSUR: The death of a cow and a calf at Vadookkara, near here, on February 3 and 5, respectively, has been attributed to anthrax by veterinarians. Preliminary reports by a team of veterinarians on Thursday say the animals died of anthrax. Samples have been sent to the CDIO lab at Palode in Thiruvananthapuram for further tests.

Complaint filed against police

KOTTAYAM: The victim of the alleged sexual assault at the School of Medical Education here, who was allegedly attacked recently at her hostel in Kollam, has complained against the police to the Home Minister. According to the complaint dated February 6, 2007, the FIR recorded by the police following the alleged attack in the hostel was fabricated and what appeared in the FIR was not what she had deposed on the day. She had not named anyone to the police, but the FIR showed names of two persons who were accused in the sexual assault case. She felt this was part of an attempt to portray her as psychologically imbalanced. - Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Minister for Agriculture Mullakara Ratnakaran on Thursday inaugurated a four-day National Information Technology Festival organised by the Computer Applications Department of the TKM College of Engineering. The festival, Esperanza' 07, comprises Web designing, coding and word hunt. The festival will conclude on February 11. — Staff Reporter.

Supplyco starts daily monitoring of stock

KOCHI: The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) started daily monitoring of stock from Thursday to ensure availability of commodities at its counters in view of the increasing rise in prices of essential commodities. "The monitoring is done at the depot level. This will help maintain stock by moving commodities between depots," said Yogesh Gupta, Managing Director of Supplyco. — Staff Reporter

Double life term for raping minor

THRISSUR: Thrissur Fast Track Court judge Joseph Thekkekuruvinal on Thursday awarded double life term to Babu, 30, of Appozhamparambil in Azhikode for raping and murdering a seven-month-old girl. The prosecution argued that he had raped and killed Manimekhala, on July 9, 2004. He had abducted the girl from a family of vagabonds, the prosecution said. The judge said Babu would have to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 10 years. — Staff Reporter

Veda Pada Sala inauguration

THRISSUR: Devaswom Minister G. Sudhakaran will inaugurate a Veda Pada Sala constructed by the Guruvayur Devaswom at Kaveedu in the Pookkodu panchayat on February 10. The Minister will also distribute assistance of Rs.60 lakh given by the Devaswom for renovation of dilapidated temples. — Staff Reporter

Receives memorabilia

THRISSUR: Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby received memorabilia related to Kollengode Raja here on Thursday. The Minister received a coat, a portrait, two hats, glass paintings and a pair of sandals from Suvarna Menon, wife of Vasudeva Menon, grandson of Kollengode Raja. THRISSUR: The Ankanam E.P. Sushma Endowment Award, instituted by the Ankanam Samskarika Samithy, was presented by writer Sara Joseph to V. Dileep for his short story Neethisaram at a function here on Thursday. The award carried a purse of Rs.2,500, citation and statuette. The function was organised as part of the observance of the 11th death anniversary of writer E.P. Sushma. Sara Joseph said that art and literature should help man overcome hate and enmity. R.I.
