CHANDIGARH: The Bhupinder Singh Hooda-led Congress Government in Haryana, which completes two years in office next month, is concentrating increasingly on laying new roads and re-carpeting and upgrading the existing ones to showcase the State as a favourite destination for industrial investment. An official note issued here on Thursday stated that in the past two years the State Public Works Department had laid, re-carpeted or upgraded more than 9,000-km length of roads and set for itself a target of 10,000-km length for 2007-08. The Department is already maintaining 23,000-km of roads. The note said a prominent magazine had adjudged the roads in Haryana as one of the best in the country. In all, 1,450 works have been undertaken under various schemes on highways, district roads, ordinary district roads and new constructions this fiscal for which Rs. 870 crores have been allocated. Meanwhile, work has been initiated on construction of the 135-km-long Kundli-Manesar-Palwal expressway. Construction work has also started on the elevated and underground road project at Panipat on National Highway No. 1 and four-laning of the Ambala-Zirakpur stretch of National Highway-1. The PWD has also launched a scheme under which each engineer will adopt one road/intersection for road safety measures and develop these as a model. Trees and bushes on curves that blocked sight were being trimmed or cut to facilitate a clear view of the traffic. Besides, horizontal and vertical curves are being improved to make the roads safer.
