NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed further sealing operations in the Capital following the Centre's notification of the new Master Plan for Delhi-2021, which allows commercial and mixed land use on the 2,183 roads affected by the drive. A Bench of the Court comprising Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice Tarun Chatterjee granted the stay after counsel for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) made a mention for early listing of the application to put off the sealing operations on the roads already notified for commercial use under the September 7 and 15, 2006, notifications. These notifications gave traders protection. But the Court asked them to give an undertaking that they would stop commercial activity in the event of its striking down the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act granting protection to them. Counsel said that as the Court had already decided to examine the validity of the Master Plan at its next hearing on February 20, the sealing operations could be deferred till then. However, the Bench said it was staying the drive only till February 12 and posted the matter for further hearing that day. The MCD said 2,183 roads, which were provided protection under the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, notification, were included also in the Master Plan as commercial, mixed land use and pedestrian shopping streets for purposes of regularisation.
