CHENNAI: The Italian Trade Commission is trying to promote a cluster approach between Indian and Italian companies in sectors such as electronics, mechanics and electromechanics, Antonella Bianchi, Representative, Mechanical Technology Consortium (CTM), Italy, said on Thursday.

Co-operative ventures were in demand in areas such as design and engineering, Ms. Bianchi, who is in Chennai as part of an Italian trade delegation, promoted by the Italian Trade Commission (ITC), said during a presentation at the Andhra Chamber of Commerce.

The consortium was working on an ambitious project with the ITC, trying to establish partnerships with companies in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The delegation, with representation from the mechanical, electromechanical, electronics and automotive industries, was on the second week of its Indian visit.

"We are trying to meet and understand the best way to work together with Indian companies, as the boom in the Indian economy has triggered interest among Italian companies," Ms. Bianchi added.

Bilateral trade between India and Italy had shown a robust 20 per cent growth over the past two years, Baboolal P. Rathore, president, Andhra Chamber of Commerce, said.

Italy had emerged as the India's fourth biggest export market in the European Union.

A number of bilateral pacts had also been signed in areas such as bilateral investment protection agreement, tourism, double taxation avoidance agreement and in tackling terrorism, organised crime and illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, he added.
