BE OF ASSISTANCE: Collector T.N. Venkatsh addressing bankers in Karur on Wednesday.

KARUR: Foster and support innovative ideas and activities of self-help groups that empower the downtrodden and the economically weaker sections, Collector T.N. Venkatesh said here on Wednesday.

Addressing an orientation meet for bankers, organised by the Karur unit of Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation, Mr. Venkatesh urged bankers to be broadminded in lending credit to the self-help groups.

Besides direct lending, bankers should foster innovative ideas and activities of self- help groups and assist their activities through Swarna Jayanthi Gram Swarzogar Yojana.

He thanked the bankers for supporting a lot of SHG activities. Mr. Venkatesh called upon successful bankers to share their experiences in lending to successful SHGs.

The Collector also called upon the industrial entrepreneurs in the district to train the SHG members in income generating job works so that they could earn money by making subsidiary products.

The Indian Overseas Bank, Thanthonrimalai branch, P. Duraisamy, noted that while there was no single group some years ago, there were about 1,200 groups of which over 800 eligible groups had been credit-linked.

At present, the outstanding under the SHGs credit linkage was about Rs. 4 crore and the interest income to the branch was Rs. 30 lakh a year. He said the recovery was 99 percentage. Similarly other bankers shared their experiences in extending credit to the SHGs.

Yunus idea

The Lead District Manager, K. Chandrasekaran, referred to the example of the Bangladeshi Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus whose idea of small credit and lending won acclaim the world over for having improved the status of the economically weaker sections, especially women.

The Project Manager, District Rural Development Agency, M. Madhavi, and Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, P. Murugesan, participated in the interactive sessions.
