CAPITAL GRANT: Commissioner of Municipal Administration Niranjan Mardi (left) hands over a Rs.1 crore cheque to Ambattur chairman K.N. Sekar (second from right) and Ambattur Commissioner V. Chakrapani (right) on Thursday.
CHENNAI: Ambattur and Madhavaram municipalities were given subsidies totalling Rs.3 crore on Thursday towards the underground sewerage project. Ambattur municipal chairman K.N. Sekar received Rs.1 crore towards the ongoing underground sewer project from Commissioner of Municipal Administration, Niranjan Mardi. With this, a total of Rs.3.50 crore has been given to Ambattur local body under the capital grants to Chennai Metropolitan Development Plans. This would ease the municipality's burden of repaying loans for developmental works. Work has been completed in seven of the proposed 19 wards. The project is in progress in four wards of areas including Vijayalakshmipuram, Krishnapuram, Oragadam Venkatapuram and Lenin Nagar. The estimated cost of the project was Rs.39.60 crore. The municipality has already spent about Rs.6 crore including the grant of Rs. 2.5 crore. Municipal commissioner, V. Chakrapani said that the subsidy would be used to speed up the work and complete by December. This would include house connections and linking of the sewerage system to Koyambedu sewerage treatment plant. The remaining 33 wards would be provided with the system in the second phase of the project. Similarly, Madhavaram municipality was provided with Rs.2 crore under the Government grant. Mr. Mardi said that the tenders would be called for on February 16 for the underground sewerage project in the local body comprising 30 wards. The estimated cost for the project is Rs.30 crore to be implemented with the assistance of Chennai Metrowater. Similar projects were being taken up in various stages in other municipalities, including Pallavaram, Thiruvottiyur and Tambaram as part of comprehensive water supply and sewerage project in Chennai Metropolitan Area, he added.
