LAKE BEAUTIFICATION: Garbage dumped near the Mangal Eri being removed as part of eviction drive by Ambattur Municipality on Thursday. Photo: K.Pichumani
CHENNAI : Mangal Eri, a water body located in the heart of Mogappair, is set for a facelift with encroachments on the lakebed brought to an end on Thursday. Improvement works on the lake at Rs. 20 lakh were stopped midway a few months ago as the problem of encroached structures had to be addressed. Spread across seven acres, Mangal Eri had about 11 structures encroaching on the lakebed. Tension prevailed in the area with some encroachments alleged to have belonged to persons related to municipal councillors. However, the issue was solved as encroachers came forward to move on Thursday in view of eviction drive by Ambattur municipality. The local body staff also cleared garbage dumped near the lake, and carried out bund strengthening work on the lake. A municipal official said that the construction of compound wall, which was left incomplete on one side, would be finished. The remaining Rs. 10 lakh would be used to desilt the water body and construct a footpath around the lake running up to a distance of 1 km. Work would be completed in two months, he added. If the works are to be carried out in the stipulated time, the proposal for letting in boats as part of beautification drive may become a reality this year.
