Staff Reporter

Suicide note gives no clue to the deaths

CHENNAI: In an incident that has shocked the neighbourhood, a family of five was found dead inside their house at Tiruvamiyur, south Chennai, on Thursday.

Police said they received a call saying that a house in Tiruvanmiyur East Mada Street remained locked from inside and there was no information about the occupants.

A team rushed to the spot and broke open the front door, and found Velayutham (45), his wife Eswari (36), and their three daughters, Vijayalakshmi, Suganya and Shobana dead. Velayutham was found hanging, and there were strangulation marks around the necks of the three girls; Eswari was found lying on the floor. It is suspected that Velayutham could have killed his three daughters and administered poison to his wife and later hanged himself to death.

A suicide note found in the house provided no clues to the deaths. Tiruvanmiyur police have registered a case and are investigating. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem to the Government Royapettah Hospital.

Carpenter

"The moment we received the information, we went and found the family members dead," said Assistant Commissioner of Police, Adyar, A Hari. "The reason for such an extreme step by the family members is not known."

Investigations revel that Velayutham, a carpenter, worked on a contract basis with a corporate hospital in the city. The couple had four daughters and the eldest daughter whose name was given as Kavitha was married to her own uncle Arumugam. Velayutham was paying Rs 1,200 as rent for the house and two of his daughters - Suganya and Shobana were studying tenth and ninth standard in a local school.
