NEW DELHI: Repolling will be ordered in six polling stations in two for reasons of failure of electronic voting machines and in four others due to disturbances in Manipur, where the first phase of Assembly elections was over on Thursday, Deputy Election Commissioner J.P. Aggarwal told journalists here. Central paramilitary forces were deployed in all polling stations and videography was taken in over 200 sensitive booths.
List delayed
To a question, another Deputy Commissioner R. Bhattacharya confirmed that the Congress failed to submit in time the list of leaders addressing Assembly election meetings in Punjab. According to the Representation of the People Act, the list ought to have been submitted by January 25, last date for filing of nominations. But the Election Commission received it only on January 27 and the State Chief Electoral Officer on February 2. Asked about the consequences of the delay, he said the expenses on conducting meetings and rallies of leaders such as Congress president Sonia Gandhi would be included in the expenses of the candidates concerned. If more than one candidate was introduced at a meeting, the expenses would be apportioned among them. Expenditure observers in charge of the constituencies would keep a watch on the spending and also verify the statement of accounts filed by the candidates within 30 days of completion of the polls.
