Supplyco starts daily monitoring

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) started daily monitoring of stock from Thursday to ensure availability of commodities at its counters in view of the increasing rise in prices of essential commodities.

"The monitoring is done at the depot level. This will help maintain stock by moving commodities between depots," said Yogesh Gupta, Managing Director of Supplyco.

Data was being collected about sales at individual depots and expected sales for the current month. "We have been ignoring redistribution till now and with this daily monitoring, it could be done effectively," said Mr. Gupta.

Supplyco initiated procurement of essential commodities to ensure availability. Procurement tender, which was issued on February 1, was being processed and material should reach the godowns in a week.

"Our personnel will soon visit other States like Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh to procure commodities like coriander, cumin seeds, rice and chilly directly from Government agencies," Mr. Gupta said.

The Corporation was also trying to bring down the price tag of essential commodities. In an interesting development, the Corporation was at times faced with shortage of stock in red chilly because of bulk buying across its counters.

While red chilly was priced Rs.57 per kg at Supplyco counters, it costs Rs.90 in the open market.

Supplyco has five depots in the district — Ernakulam, Perumbavoor, Muvattupuzha, North Paravur and Kochi. The Corporation operated through its network of counters like 10 Maveli Stores, 14 labham stores and two super markets in Ernakulam; 20 Maveli Stores and eight labham stores in Perumbavoor; 20 Maveli Stores and eight labham stores in Muvattupuzha; 17 Maveli Stores and six labham stores in North Paravur and eight Maveli Stores and one labham store in Kochi.
