Teachers held in student's suicide case

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: The Crime Branch police have arrested three teachers of the Central Polytechnic at Vattiyoorkavu in connection with the suicide of a part-time student in 2005.

The accused are Syriac Jose of Kudapanakkunu, Suhara Beevi of Peroorkada and Kumudini of Vattiyoorkavu.

They were produced before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Varkala, on charges of abetting suicide and causing defamation under Sections 306 and 500, respectively, of the Indian Penal Code. The court, later, granted bail to the accused after imposing strict conditions.

Vinu, 29, of Chatanpara committed suicide on September 3, 2005. In his suicide note, the victim alleged that certain teachers at the polytechnic had been harassing him for over a year. Vinu was doing a part-time course in electronics.

The Crime Branch said some teachers had been found to have wrongly accused Vinu of misbehaving with a woman guest lecturer.

Vinu had sent several letters stressing his innocence to the Director of Technical Education and the college authorities. However, the authorities concerned ignored them. The director set up a committee to inquire into the allegations raised in the suicide note.
