MADURAI: Infrastructure facilities worth Rs. 89 crore have been proposed for the Madurai district police under the modernisation of police force scheme. New buildings to house various police establishments, modern weaponry, vehicles and information technology-enabled services are among the projects mooted. According to sources, some of the major proposals in the buildings category include a District Police Office, Armed Reserve Complex and Police Club at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.4 crore. The current DPO functions in an old building constructed during the Naick regime adjacent to the Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple. The Madurai Superintendent of Police, T.S. Anbu, who declared open the Appan Tirupathi police station near here on Thursday, told `The Hindu' that four more police out-posts were proposed to be upgraded as full-fledged police stations in the district. At least eight new out-posts would come up in vulnerable areas. Considering the exigencies of work and VIP security, the police have sought sanction of 11 Tata Sumo (Spacio) vehicles. The need for computers to all the 42 police stations, four all-woman police stations, nine special units and seven sub-divisions has been emphasised for speedy transmission of information and video-conferencing. Advanced electronic gadgets such as night vision binoculars, speed-dome cameras and deep search metal detector have been placed on priority to counter the growing security challenges. Better housing facilities for over 1,600 police personnel and gymnasium at seven sub-divisional headquarters are among other proposals. The sources said modernisation on various fronts was imperative to ensure public safety. Explaining the crime profile in the district in 2005, a senior police official said 84 grave and 508 non-grave crime cases were reported. While more than 265 persons died in road accidents, 36 were murdered in different incidents. "The proposal under the modernisation scheme has been worked out with a futuristic view," he added.
