Move to acquire land for airport opposed

KARAIKAL: Farmers of the Nedungadu commune in Karaikal district took out procession in Karaikal on Friday and staged a demonstration in front of the Karaikal Collector's office demanding the Government to give up its move to acquire over 700 acres of wetland for establishing an airport here.

Hundreds of farmers from Ponpethi, Keezhasembiyangal, Puthakudi, Thondaimangalam, Kiliyanur and Kottagam villages participated. The farmers, shouting slogans against the Government, said that hundreds of small and marginal farmers and agricultural labourers would be affectecd.

S.P. Selvashanmugam, convener of the Karaikal Struggle Group told The Hindu on Friday that the KSG members and members of Karaikal Panchayatraj Struggle Group would observe a fast in Nadungadu on Sunday.
