Date for all-party meet to be fixed soon

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that the date for an all-party meeting to decide on the State's response to the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal will be announced next week.

He told presspersons here on Friday that copies of the five-volume award would be sent to leaders of political parties, legal experts and irrigation engineers.

The all-party meeting would be convened a few days later after they studied the contents.

Asked whether the Government would replace the team of advocates led by senior counsel Fali S. Nariman who argued the State's case before the tribunal for over a decade, the Chief Minister said it was improper to criticise counsel for the State.

Taking a serious view of comments by the Congress leader H. Vishwanath on Janata Dal (S) national president H.D. Deve Gowda's silence on the final award by the tribunal, Mr. Kumaraswamy said `these leaders were not even born when Mr. Gowda launched an agitation in 1964 as an independent MLA."

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who met Mr. Deve Gowda on Friday, said his father's concern for farmers and his experience on the Cauvery dispute should not be taken lightly.

The Chief Minister thanked the people of the State for showing restraint in the face of what he described as the adverse verdict.
