IMPHAL: Manipur's Chief Electoral Officer R.R. Rashmi on Friday said that an average of 85 per cent votes were cast in the first phase of polling in the 19 Assembly constituencies of Thoubal, Senapati and Ukhrul districts. The elections passed off peacefully without any major incidents, he told reporters here. However, re-polling could be ordered in some centres. A decision was likely to be taken by Saturday. If deemed necessary, they would be held either on Monday or Tuesday. Mr. Rashmi said that although all polling parties from remote and interior places were yet to arrive at the district headquarters of Senapati and Ukhrul, the overall poll percentage was not likely to be more than 85.
Senapati's distinction
The highest percentage, ranging from 85 to 90, was recorded in Senapati district. In Thoubal, where all polling parties had arrived, it was 80 per cent. In Ukhurul, 38 poll parties were yet to arrive at the headquarters. They were expected to arrive on Friday night or Saturday morning. The second phase of polling is scheduled for February 14 and the third and last phase on February 23.
