Subash Kollur taking charge in Gulbarga on Friday.

GULBARGA: The newly appointed Chairman of the North Eastern Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) Subash Kollur on Friday said that steps would be taken to end the menace of private bus operators operating in Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary districts in violation of the Contract Carriages Act.

Addressing presspersons here along with Managing Director of the NEKRTC Shankar Patil after taking charge as Chairman of the corporation, Mr. Kollur admitted that owing to the lack of coordination between the Road Transport Authority, police and the NEKRTC, the menace in these districts had gone unchecked so far.

He said steps would be initiated with the help of respective deputy commissioners and superintendents of police to launch a joint operation to ensure that private bus operators did not violate the Act.

Mr. Patil said strict instructions had been issued to divisional controllers to ensure that no private operator stopped his vehicle within a 500-metre radius from bus stands as per the court order.

Mr. Kollur said the NEKRTC registered an increased revenue this year when compared to the previous year. It would be converted into a model transport corporation in the State soon with increased efficiency and better passenger amenities in bus stands.

He said with Rs. 100 crore sanctioned by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy for development of facilities in the NEKRTC, seven bus depots at Deodurga, Maski Sandur, Kustagi, Surpur, Afzalpur and Hagaribommanahalli would constructed at a cost of Rs. 5.20 crore. Besides, 43 more bus stands would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 39.37 crores and 90 more buses purchased.

Mr. Kollur said bus stands in Koppal, Gangavathi, Kampli, Arkera, Khanhosalli, Ujjaini, Kudtinni, Moka, Soogi, Holalu, Sandur and Gulbarga Super Market would be modernised at an estimated cost of Rs. 7.5 crore.

The regional workshop being built at Yadgir at a cost of Rs. 9.82 crore was nearing completion. It would start functioning from this May. Bus stands at Aland, Chincholi, Lingasugur, Surpur, Sirguppa, Huvinhadagali,Kudlgi, Bidar and Aurad were being modernised at a cost of Rs. 4 crore, Mr. Kollur said.
