13 schoolchildren injured in accident

THENI: Thirteen schoolchildren were injured when an overcrowded autorickshaw overturned at Karuvelnaickenpatti near here on Friday. The injured were admitted to the Theni Government Medical College Hospital. The accident took place when the driver took a turn to avoid a dog that crossed the road. — Staff Reporter

Pulse polio campaign

CHENNAI: The second phase of the pulse polio campaign will be held on February 11. As many as 40,339 special camps will be conducted across the State for administration of polio drops to children below five. — Special Correspondent

Deadline for registration extended

CHENNAI: The deadline for traders to register under the Value Added Tax regime has been extended up to February 15. A Revenue department press release requested traders who had not registered to utilise the facility. — Special Correspondent

DMK wins 24 local body posts

CHENNAI: Dravida Munentra Kazhagam candidates won 24 of the 41 local body posts where by-elections were held on February 8. The Congress won five, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the DMDK won one each. Independents won seven and the CPI won two. — Special Correspondent

Strike period to be `working' days

CHENNAI: The 25 days that college teachers went on strike in 2002 to protest against the move to affiliate government colleges to universities would be considered as `working' days. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday issued orders to this effect. The move would cost the Government Rs.4.66 crore. — Special Correspondent

Judge reserves order

CHENNAI: Justice Prafulla Kumar Misra, who is the third judge hearing the cases relating to October 13, 2006 polls to Chennai Corporation, reserved his orders on Friday. The matter was listed before him after a Division Bench comprising Justice S.J. Mukhopadhaya and Justice F.M. Ibrahim Kalifulla passed a split verdict on January 12. The day-to-day hearing in the matter began on February 5. — Special Correspondent

Service extended

CHENNAI: Train No. 2669/2670 Chennai Central-Varanasi-Chennai Central Ganga Kaveri (bi-weekly) Express will be extended to Chappra. Train No 2669 will depart at 5-30 pm on Mondays and Saturdays from Chennai Central and arrive at 8 a.m. on Wednesday/Sunday. The train will leave Varanasi at 8-20 a.m. and reach Chappra by noon the same day. Train No. 2670 will depart Chappra at 4 p.m. on Monday/Wednesday and reach Varanasi at 8-10 p.m. It will then leave Varanasi at 8-25 p.m. and reach Chennai Central at 9-50 a.m. on Wednesday/Friday. The inaugural service, Special Train No. 2670A, will leave Chappra at 11 a.m. on February 10 and arrive at Chennai Central at 5 a.m. on February 12. The train will stop at Varanasi, Allahabad, Satna, Katni, Jabalpur, Itarsi, Nagpur, Balharshah, Sirpur Kagaznagar, Warangal, Vijayawada, Ongole and Gudur. Regular service will begin from Chennai Central on February 10 and from Chappra February 12. — Special Correspondent

Four child labourers rescued

ERODE: The labour department officials rescued four child labourers here on Wednesday. In a release on Thursday, Labour Inspector C. Thangavel stated that following instructions from Collector D. Karthikeyan, the Labour Welfare Inspector and officials from National Child Labour Project conducted raids on 158 eateries and rescued the child labourers. Cases had been registered against owners of the shops that employed them. - Staff Reporter

Animal census

ERODE: The forest department is conducting a census of animals in the Erode and Sathyamangalam forests on February 16, 17 and 18.

A release from the department on Friday said that interested college students could apply to the forest officer, Erode. For details, they could contact the Erode District Forest Officer at 0424 2291722 or Coimbatore District Forest Scheme and Environment Protection Association at 98941 50044.

Man arrested

Tiruchi: The police arrested Ravi (47) recently on the charge of stealing mobile phones and seized six cell phones from his possession.

A police team was conducting rounds at Junction bus stand when Ravi, who was holding a plastic bag, began to run on seeing them.

He was caught and the phones were found in the bag.

Surprise checks

Tiruchi: TNEB Officials conducted checks in industrial units and commercial establishments coming under Rockfort office jurisdiction here.

A total number of 555 power connections were checked. Violations were detected in some connections.

Insurance policy

TIRUCHI: The Indian Overseas Bank, Mathur, organised a programme to explain to the public about the `IOB Jeevan' Group Insurance policy and its salient features at its branch near here recently. Senior Regional Manager, T.V. Nagarajan explained in detail about the policy and its benefits.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 83.74 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Friday. The inflow was 231 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 2,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

New Collector

Nagercoil: S.Swarna, the first woman Collector, since the partition of Kanyakumari district from Kerala during 1956, would assume charge on Monday.

Case against constable

Tuticorin: A case has been registered against Muthu Kumar, a constable of Central Reserve Police Force, on the charge of torturing his wife.

According to sources, the constable, posted at Imphal in Manipur, married Swapnadevi recently. After a few days, he reportedly demanded Rs. one lakh from her. The constable is at large, the police said.

Woman drowned

Tuticorin: Ananthammal (75) allegedly drowned on Thursday while she was taking bath in the Tamarabarani at Eral.

The police said the deceased was schizophrenic and was under treatment.

Byelection results

Nagercoil: DMK candidate Justin Nathaniel won the councillor post of Thengampudhur Town Panchayat by defeating his nearest rival, Arul Sekar (independent) by a margin of 101 votes in the by-election held on Thursday.

Jeyakodi (independent) won the councillor post of Anjugramam Town Panchayat by a margin of 81 votes, defeating his nearest rival, Kathiravan of DMDK. Mariyathangam (independent) won the ward member post of Kumarankudi village panchayat by defeating his nearest rival Rajam (independent).

Demonstration

Tirunelveli: Advocates here on Friday staged demonstration protesting the "attitude" of the Karnataka Government in the Cauvery issue.

Raising slogans against the Government, they urged the Centre to take steps to implement the final award of the tribunal and nationalise inter-state rivers. They also abstained from court activities.

Past Lions Governors honoured

CHENNAI : The past governors of the three Lions Districts 324 A1, A5 and A6- Vasudevan, G.V.Raman, R.Lakshmipathy and S.Natarajan were honoured at a meeting hosted by Lions Club of Chennai Periamet last week. Medical aid, sewing machines and provision articles were distributed.

Blood donation camp at college

About 130 students of SSN Management and Computer Applications donated blood at a camp held on the college premises on Friday. The camp was jointly organised by Rotary Club of Perungudi, Rotaract Club of SSN Somca and VHS TTK Blood Bank.

Art gallery inaugurated

A new art gallery `The Ray O Art Gallery' was inaugurated by R. D. Bhaskar, chairman of Lala Kala Academi on Friday at 40, K.B.Dasan Salai, Teynampet.

The first art exhibition of the gallery is a painting show of 50 renowned artists from South India till February 20.

Lecture on digital signal processing

Students of LCR College of Engineering and Technology were updated about the recent trends in digital signal processing through a lecture by S. S. Dash on Thursday.

Students were also given tips on ihow to face nterview ,at the seminar organised by Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering.

Indian revises unchecked fares

CHENNAI: Indian has revised unchecked fares (in the X class) and Easy Fares (in the I class) on various sectors from airports in Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

On the Chennai-Tiruchi and Chennai -Kozhikode sectors, the fare has been revised to Rs.800 excluding taxes and levies. On the Chennai-Kochi and Chennai-Thiruvananthapuram sectors, the fares would be Rs.1000 plus taxes and levies.

The taxes and levies include a Passenger Service Fee of Rs.225 and Fuel Surcharge of Rs.750. For information, call 1407 or 1800-180-1407. — Special Correspondent
