HYDERABAD: Backward Classes Welfare Minister D. Srinivas on Friday said that all eligible BC students would be given post-matriculation scholarships in the next financial year and a sum of about Rs.300 crores was likely to be allocated for the purpose. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he criticised the Opposition parties for finding fault with the Government on the issue and said that budget allocation for BC scholarship was higher in the State when compared to other States. He said 100 per cent renewals were given and 76 per cent fresh applicants provided scholarships this year.
Statistics
Reeling out statistics, he said the budget for BC scholarships had never exceeded Rs.100 crores during the previous TDP regime. During 2002-03, the amount allocated for post-matric scholarship was Rs.78.38 crores and Rs.12.63 crores for fee reimbursement. The following year, it was Rs.77.23 crores (scholarship) and Rs.18. 45crores (fee reimbursement). During 2005-06, there was an increase of Rs.35 crores in the total allocation, including fee reimbursement. A sum of Rs.124 crores was earmarked in 2006-07 for scholarships and Rs.26.2 crores for reimbursement. He said Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had already assured that all eligible applicants would be given scholarships next year. The State Government also ensured that there was no cut in the power supplied to the social welfare hostels.
