Elected

HYDERABAD: National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) Director V. P. Dimri has been elected president of the Earth System Sciences section for the 95th Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) to be held at Visakhapatnam in January next year.

Dr. Dimri was also honoured with the G.P. Chatterjee award of ISCA by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh last month for his contribution in the field of geophysics. - Special Correspondent

Review by SC panel

HYDERABAD: The National Commission for Scheduled Castes reviewed safeguards for SC employees in State Bank of Hyderabad here on Friday.

Fakirbhai Vaghela, vice-chairman, V. Devender, member, K. L. Dhanak, member-secretary, K. D. Bhanoor, deputy director, and P. Narayana Moorthy, assistant director, Hyderabad office of the Commission, undertook the review with representatives of two employees' association and the management. - Special Correspondent

APCOB deposit scheme

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative Bank (APCOB) has launched `Sreenidhi deposit scheme' offering 9.10 per cent interest for 450 days. The scheme, valid up to March 31, has a lock-in period of 180 days.

The minimum amount to be deposited is Rs. 25,000. The interest offered to senior citizens is 9.6 per cent. The effective rate of interest would be 9.5 per cent. It works out to 10.07 per cent for senior citizens. - Special Correspondent

Posting of MRPs

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders listing clarifications on the appointment of mandal resource persons to tide over the problem arising out of their posting in `parent schools' (matru samsthala patashalalu).

According to Andhra Pradesh State Teachers' Union here on Friday, the orders said MRPs would be posted only against vacancies. If there was none, the district-level committee would clear postings against vacancies in the mandals or in nearby areas. - Special Correspondent

Mala Mahanadu charge

HYDERABAD: Mala Mahanadu has charged the Government with taking up distribution of assigned lands for covering up its `failure' in ensuring welfare of Dalits. K. Sivaji, president, told reporters on Friday that the Government `miserably' failed in extending benefits like scholarships, backlog posts, promotions and employment opportunities to Dalits. - Special Correspondent

Nominated

WARANGAL: Kakatiya University Commerce associate professor P. Indrasena Reddy has been nominated executive committee member of the Indian Commerce Association for a period of three years.

He is one among the 25 nominated from all over India. He is also member of Research Development Association, Indian Management Research Association. - Staff Reporter

Siblings commit suicide

KURNOOL: Two Chenchu brothers hanged themselves over a petty issue at Yerramatham in Kothapalli mandal of Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, Naganna (25) was beating his wife Lingamma when his brother Seshulaiah (20) rushed to her rescue. He was assaulted by the elder brother. Hurt, Seshulaiah hanged himself on the outskirts of the hamlet. Shocked by the death of his brother, Naganna also hanged himself. - Special Correspondent

Extension counter upgraded

KURNOOL: The extension counter of the Andhra Bank on the Kurnool Medical College campus was upgraded into a full-fledged branch here on Friday. Principal In-charge Seshasai formally inaugurated the branch while Deputy General Manager of the Bank S.R.K. Prasad, Vice-Principal Niranjan Paul, Superintendent Anjaiah and others were present.

KADAPA: Works on Rs.1.38-crore uranium project at Thummalapalle in Vemula mandal should commence after paying compensation and rehabilitating the displaced persons, CPI(M) district secretary B. Narayana demanded on Friday. He asked the Government evolve a relief and rehabilitation package on the lines of West Bengal. -Staff Reporter

Examine anomalies

KADAPA: United Medical and Health Employees Union has set up a 12-member State-level committee to examine anomalies in Pay Revision Commission for regular employees, its district president M. Prasad said on Friday. A district sadassu will be organised on February 25 against G.O. 874. Mr. Raghunath Reddy, in another statement, demanded action against Annaiah, a Rayachoti municipality employee, for allegedly insulting CITU leaders. . -Staff Reporter

Training for sarpanches

ANANTAPUR: Training for sarpanches and upa-sarpanches on their rights and responsibilities, awareness on various Government schemes -- welfare and development - will be held in all mandal headquarters for three days each. According to the officials, the training will be held in 12 mandals from February 12 to 14, in 12 mandals from February 19 to 21, in 16 mandals from February 22 to 24, in 12 mandals from February 26 to 28, in 8 mandals from March 1 to 3 and in 3 mandals from March 5 to 7. - Staff Reporter

New Democracy seeks leaders' release

Kakinada: CPI(ML) New Democracy district leader S. Raja Rao has demanded the immediate release of Bachala Lakshmaiah alias Ramesh, a senior leader of the party, and J. Suresh, district- level student leader, who were arrested at Barangi village near Rampachodavaram in the agency area on Thursday night. He alleged that both the leaders were not produced before the court and their whereabouts not known. - Correspondent

ATM inaugurated

VIZIANAGARAM: The second ATM of the Andhra Bank was inaugurated near R&B guesthouse in Cantonment area here on Friday.

Later, bank Deputy General Manager K. Sethu Prasad told reporters that this was the 31st ATM in the Visakhapatnam Zone. Biometric ATM for illiterates in potential areas in Srikakulam district would be opened shortly, he added. Branch Manager V. Ramakrishna was present. - Correspondent

Dig at DEO

Kakinada: Nallamilli Sesha Reddy, chairman of Aditya Group of Educational Institutions and MLC candidate for the Godavari districts teachers' constituency, has alleged that DEO P. Parvati is ill-treating teachers.

He accused the DEO of humiliating teachers on one pretext or the other. Mr. Reddy said that he took the issue to the notice of the Collector and the Minister for Education. - Correspondent

Action against officials

ELURU: Collector Lav Agarwal on Friday reportedly surrendered to their respective head offices a couple of executive engineers each from PR and RWS departments on grounds of their poor show in fulfilling their targets relating to the Indiramma programme.

They failed to attend a review meeting here on Thursday which led to their surrender.

Stone laid for road works

SRIKAKULAM: Etcherla MLA Kondru Murali Mohan on Friday laid the foundation stone for three roads costing Rs.1.02 crores and measuring 15 km in Etcherla, Laveru and Ranasthalam mandals. - Special Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: The police arrested five CPI(M) leaders, including party divisional secretary Reddy Sankara Rao and district committee member T.V. Ramana, when their dharna at the Mandal Revenue Office here on Friday turned violent. - Correspondent
