BANGALORE: Governor T.N. Chaturvedi has failed to discharge his constitutional responsibilities, according to Congress members of the Legislative Council. They are of the view that he should have directed the Government to hold an election for the post of Chairman of the Council. The members B.K. Chandrashekar, V.S. Ugrappa, V.R. Sudarshan, Saleem Ahmed and Prakash Rathod told presspersons here on Friday that Mr. Chaturvedi should have directed the Government to hold the election during either of the last two sessions held in July in Bangalore and in September in Belgaum. Contrary to expectations, Mr. Chaturvedi did not respond to two memorandums submitted to him by the Congress seeking his intervention to set right what the party termed the unconstitutional methods being adopted by the Government to stall the election of a new Chairman. They demanded that Mr. Chaturvedi intervene at least now to enable the legislature to overcome the constitutional stalemate and ensure that the House conducted its business smoothly. They said that they were planning to tackle the matter by all means within the framework of the Constitution, including the extreme step of approaching President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
`Allow discussion'
Earlier, some of the ruling coalition members, including Srikante Gowda, Abdul Azeem and `Mukhyamantri' Chandru, told presspersons that the Government should allow a detailed discussion in the House on the Cauvery dispute. If the Congress members continued to disrupt the House, they should be physically removed.
