Move to curb dissidence within his party following recent ministerial changes
|
COLOMBO:
In a bid to curb dissidence within his party following the recent ministerial changes, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday night sacked three senior Cabinet ministers.
Those who were shown the door were Ports and Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera, who was stripped of the Foreign Affairs portfolio, National Heritage Minister Anura Bandaranaike (shifted from Tourism Ministry) and Port Development Minister Sripathi Suriyarachchi.
According to sources in the Presidential secretariat, in a brief order, Mr. Rajapaksa has notified the Cabinet Secretariat that the three Ministers have been relieved of their responsibilities with immediate effect. The three were unhappy over the recent reshuffle of the Council of Ministers which saw induction of several parliamentarians from the opposition United National Party (UNP), taking the total strength of Ministers to an unprecedented 108.
