Traffic to Karnataka resumes
Staff Reporter
CHENNAI:
After four days, traffic between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka started moving late on Thursday night.
However, interstate lorry traffic is likely to come to a halt again on February 12 in view of the bandh announced by political parties and organisations in Karnataka to protest against the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
Over 6,700 lorries from Tamil Nadu crossed into Karnataka on National Highway 4 between 10 pm and 4 am, moving through Tumkur and Chitradurga districts. However, lorry drivers were told not to go through Mysore and Mandya districts, as the situation remains tense there. Traffic on the Hosur Road was thrown out of gear at Zuzuvadi, where Tamil Nadu police blocked a procession of over 250 activists and farmers of the Kannada Jakuridhi Vedike and the Karnataka Kadinada Sanga attempting to cross the border.
The agitators shouted slogans against the Tribunal, claiming that Karnataka was not given a fair deal. The State Lorry Owners' Federation-Tamil Nadu has asked operators not to ply services to Karnataka from midnight on February 11 to 12 midnight.
