GUWAHATI: Everything moves at a slow pace here no matter how much hard you try to change it. The magic word to overcome the system, as people who have been here before say, is patience and perseverance. A state not used to a fast-paced life, has been suddenly pitchforked into hosting a multi-discipline Games of such huge magnitude, and the initial snags are already visible. After a wonderful Opening ceremony, the organisers have not yet tied up the loose ends as far as feeding the media with basic information. The entries of each discipline are not yet ready. The National Games website gives incomplete details. Maybe, everything will fall into place in a few days. It's early days, you could argue. The tennis competition scheduled on February 10 (Saturday) will now commence on February 12 (Monday). The tennis events, however, will, conclude as per schedule on February 17. Raktim Saikia, Secretary, Assam Tennis Association, explained that there was a communication gap between the Associations and the Organising Committee and hence the postponement.
Vinod Sridhar pulls out
There is a minor change in the composition of Tamil Nadu men's team. Vinod Sridhar has pulled out, and Vijay Sundar Prashanth has taken his place. A silver medallist in the last edition at Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu is modest about its chances this time. It would rather take it one match at a time. Tamil Nadu is banking on V.M. Ranjeet to carry its hopes in the individual singles. And to an extent, Mohammad Fariz, who is pretty much capable of causing an upset. Kamala Kannan might be used in doubles.
TN meets Kerala
The Tamil Nadu men's football team will open its campaign against Kerala. The other teams in this group are Maharashtra and Assam. Meghalaya, Punjab, West Bengal and Haryana form the other group. In a major upset on Friday, defending champion Punjab lost to Meghalaya 2-1.
The results: Football: Men: Assam 4 (Ajit Singh, Sanjeeba Rongpi 2, Durga Boro) bt Maharashtra 0; Meghalaya 2 (G. Zoromchhana) bt Punjab 1 (Guriqbal). Women: ): Manipur 4 (Bembem Roma, Moni Tombi) bt TN 2 (Antony Rosy, S. Vasanthi); Orissa 2 (Sarita Jayanti Behera, Alochona Senapati) bt Assam 1 (Sangita Boro).
