Shama Sunder

MAGNIFICENT: A view of St. Joseph's High School in Hassan.

HASSAN: St. Joseph High School here celebrated its Golden Jubilee today. The school, which was started in 1957, is also known for being the alma mater of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who studied here from first to ninth standard. Hassan MLA H.S. Prakash also studied here. It began as a primary school in a small building and has developed into a leading educational institution that is known to impart quality education. It was started by Christian missionaries but admits students from all communities.

In 1540, St. Ignatius Loyola started the Jesus Sabha, which is the part of the Christ Dharma Sabha, and started educational institutions all over the world. In India, the sabha started 150 schools and 35 colleges that cater to about four lakh students today. St. Joseph's High School is one of them and is run by the Jesuit Education Society of Bangalore.

In 1957, Father John Arora came to Hassan with a dream to build a model educational institution. The school was started in a small building in KR Puram. People donated funds liberally. He served for 11 years and laid a strong foundation.

In 1961, the school shifted to its own building on Salagame Road on a 5.1-acre piece of land. In 1963, the high school section was opened. In 1964, the school got English-medium status. After this, there was no looking back. It has achieved cent per cent results ever since. In 1991, the then Education Minister Veerappa Moily inaugurated the new building complex. In 2004, the management also purchased another 1.1-acre piece of land and began a PU section.

Promise

Mr. Kumaraswamy has promised all aid for the school's development.

Now the management plans to start D.Ed (Diploma in Education) and B.Ed courses and a hostel for poor students. There are separate heads for the primary and high school sections.
