Koraput: A Jain idol of 14th century was found while digging the land for construction of LIC building near new busstand in Jeypore on Thursday. The idol is made of some precious metal and according to inscriptions carved on its surface the idol belongs to 1490 AD. Though many Jain idols were unearthed and discovered in the past, it was for the first time that an idol made of precious metal was unearthed, Krushna Chandra Nishanko, district culture officer, said on Friday. Kalu Panda and Anil Bhatta Mishra found the idol while digging the foundation for new LIC building. It now was kept for public view at Hanuman temple in Gouda Street. This idol might throw some light on link of the region with Rajasthan as Jain idols made of metal were a common feature there, he said. However, it could be exactly known only after experts from the State Archaeological Department investigates its origin, he said.
