NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Friday gave the Delhi Government three months to carry out an amendment to the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, for enhancing the fine amount from Rs.100 to Rs.1,000 for violation of lane driving rules here in the Capital. A Division Bench of the Court comprising Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice H. R. Malhotra refused to give four months to carry out the amendment as sought by counsel for the Government. The Court had this past Tuesday gave the Government time till Friday to inform when it would give effect to its proposal to enhance the fine amount.
Deaths
Taking suo motu note of the increasing number of deaths in road accidents in the city last month on the basis of a media report, the Court had appointed Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaiam amicus curae and requested him to convene a meeting of senior officers of the Union Ministry of Transport and Shipping and the Transport Ministry of the State Government to discuss and decide the measures to be taken to check road accidents. Mr. Subramaiam last week filed a report in the Court on the basis of the discussion held with the officials. The report has, among other measures, suggested enhancing the fine amount for violation of lane driving, segregation of lanes for motorised and non-motorised vehicles and lane-wise traffic lights to check road accidents in the Capital. The Court will take up the suggestions one by one for consideration.
