TIRUCHI: Tiruchi Anna University, which became functional earlier this month, will promote information technology-assisted education and focus on creativity and innovation. Vice-Chancellor V. Ramachandran, who assumed charge on Friday, told reporters that effective IT-assisted learning environment would be created for learners to complement existing teaching methodologies.
Web-based education
Teachers of affiliated colleges would be initiated into Web-based education. Two years from now, teachers in affiliated colleges with a B.E. degree must complete post-graduation. He said research activities would gather momentum after creation of infrastructure over a year. The university would first go for 10 mbps connectivity and dedicated servers. It would have an incubation centre that would provide space for IT companies, including Infosys, Wipro, and Sify, to develop communication competencies and soft skills of students. The university set up would cope with recent shifts in higher education by switching over from physical to virtual classrooms, teacher-focussed to learner-focussed learning, and presentation mode to discovery mode. Standardised content would be replaced with individualised content. The university would facilitate learning rather than transmitting information. After studying the nature of industries and other potentialities, new region-specific programmes were on the anvil.
Technical collaboration
Possibilities of offering programmes in Fisheries Technology and Port Management would be explored. The university would have technical collaboration with world-class universities. It would channelise technology for the economic uplift of society.
Nano-technology
The university would strengthen the technical content in Tamil to expose students to nano-technology and biotechnology, and broad-base use of Tamil in technical education.
