CHENNAI: The State Government should elicit views of all stakeholders, including political parties and farmers, on the Cauvery issue in the wake of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal's final order, the Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Federation of Farmers' Associations of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts reiterated on Friday. PMK founder S. Ramadoss, who demanded an all-party meeting the day the Tribunal gave its final award, referred to the approach being adopted by Karnataka Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who had said that his Government would decide the next course of action after studying the views of political parties, which would be provided with case details. Pointing to Mr Karunanidhi's observation that he too initially thought that 419 thousand million cubic feet, apportioned to Tamil Nadu, was to be given by Karnataka, Dr. Ramadoss said the Chief Minister was in a position to have the full details. At least, the recognised parties of the State should be furnished the details. The previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime had not involved all parties while finalising its stand on the dispute. Appealing to the Chief Minister not to reject his demand, the PMK leader said the all-party meeting should discuss the pros and cons of the final order. Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of the agriculturists' organisation, urged the Public Works Department to hold discussions with farmers' organisations in the Cauvery Basin before filing a review petition in the Tribunal. Contending that lack of transparency characterised the State Government's approach in the last three decades, Mr. Kalyanam said this should end. Authorities should hold talks with farmers from the delta districts and those covered by Bhavani, Noyyal and Amaravathy, tributaries of the Cauvery.
Expressing disappointment over several aspects of the final award, Mr. Kalyanam said determination of lower irrigated area for the State and allocation of higher quantity of water to be released by Karnataka during southwest monsoon were among the issues to be pursued by the State Government before the Tribunal.
