India poised to overtake China, says Elangovan

Country's integrity, people's English knowledge key factors

CHENNAI: India's credibility and the English-speaking skills of its people will help the country overtake China economically in the years to come, Union Minister of State for Textiles E.V.K.S. Elangovan said.

Even the developed countries in the West came to accept the two features and believed that India was poised to march ahead of China because of them, he told a function organised here on Friday by the Tamil Chamber of Commerce to felicitate two frontline figures in the textile trade.

Mr. Elangovan said apart from making significant progress since Independence the country had proved its critics wrong. "We must feel proud of our country ... it is poised to become an economic superpower in the years ahead," he said.

One of the major factors driving the economic progress of the country was the change in the behaviour of youth.

Unlike their predecessors four decades ago, they were not interested in politics and participating in agitations in colleges. Instead, they planned their life and looked for good things in life, something that made them work harder.

Mr. Elangovan highlighted the contribution of Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti — felicitated on his appointment as Chairman of the Board of Trustee of Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple Trust — to society. Felicitating P.S. Rangasamy Chetty on being appointed member of the All India Handloom Board by his Ministry, the Union Minister said he was keen on nominating only those related to the field to the boards.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Kuppuswami Chetti highlighted the initiatives of the Minister for the welfare of weavers, especially removal of the anti-dumping duty on Chinese silk when their prices soared. Mr. Rangasamy Chetty thanked the organisers for the felicitation.

Madras University Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran, Member of the Legislative Assembly R.M. Palanisamy and former director of Doordarshan A. Natarajan offered felicitations. Chamber leaders, including its president S. Santhanam and vice-president Chozha Naachiar Rajasekar, spoke.
