CHENNAI: Speakers at the daylong seminar on "safety in academic institutions, chemical laboratories and chemical industries" held at the Meenakshi College for Women recently highlighted the need to identify and assess, with systematic study, hazards that could occur in institutions. Potential disasters that could occur in academic institutions included bomb threats, suicide bombing, building collapse, explosions, intruders or entry of unauthorised persons, kidnappings, electrical shocks and environment hazards. After incidents such as the Kumbakonam school fire, parents must take efforts to maintain safety in the institutions, said N. Subramonia Pillai, a safety engineer, in his address. Many parents did not know how to begin to involve themselves or cited time constraints. The simplest way could be to talk about safety to their wards, he suggested. With frequent interaction with the children about the facilities available for safety at their institutions, parents could help them familiarise themselves with safety measures, he added. In his inaugural address, M. Rajan, Director, Safety Group, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, said environmental pollution was a major concern today. He recalled the tragic Bhopal gas tragedy and stressed the need for technical and research support to educational institutions for innovation in safer and sustainable chemistry. Inspector of Factories R.K. Elangovan said safety in chemical industries played a vital role in preventing accidents.K. Pandurangan spoke on safety in chemical laboratories and V. Sriram spoke about fire and personal protective equipments. College secretary K.S. Lakshmi and the Head, Department of Chemistry, Kalyani also participated.
