100th pension adalat

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI : The Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority celebrated its 100th pension adalat on Thursday.

G. M. Akbar Ali, Member-Secretary of the TNLSA, said that since its inception in February 2002, the adalat had benefited 362 pensioners, at an administrative cost of only Rs. 3.5 lakh.

So far, 700 pension disputes had been referred to the adalats, out of which 272 were settled. They involved an amount of Rs. 2.92 crore, which included payments made while the case was pending before the adalat.

Initially, applications relating to pension disputes were being received by the Authority from the Tamil Nadu Retired Officials Association and through the Association's branches all over the State.

Before referring the cases to the adalats, efforts are made to settle the disputes at the counselling centres, Mr. Ali said.

The 100th adalat was presided over by former judge of the Madras High Court Justice A. Ramamurthi.
