Prime Minister of Italy will deliver Sesquicentennial Commemorative Lecture

CHENNAI : The Prime Minister of Italy, Romano Prodi, in one of his first public appearances in the country, will deliver the Sesquicentennial Commemorative Lecture at University of Madras here on Saturday.

The University of Madras (UoM) - Pirandello Resource Centre for Italian Studies at the Department of French and Foreign Languages, UoM, and the `Ancient Rome and India' exhibition would also be inaugurated on Saturday.

The year 2007 has been called the year of Italy in India, Fabio Rugge, Consul, Consulate General of Italy, told the press on Thursday. The Prime Minister would be visiting Bangalore, Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi between Sunday and Thursday. Italy hopes to double its bilateral trade worth $ 5 billion with India in the next two years, he said.

Sauro Mezzetti, Chairman, Chennai Regional Committee, Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that some 15 per cent of Italian business in India was based in Chennai, making it the third largest cluster in the country after Delhi and Mumbai. There was a growing demand for human resources in these companies and students from a Centre for Italian Studies would be valuable for them, he said.

Italian universities are also aiming to attract Indian students with post-graduate and doctoral programmes in a scheme that is likely to be announced shortly.

Responding to questions, Vice-Chancellor S. Ramachandran said that the university was considering setting up a centre for Tamil studies in Paris. There was a strong demand for it from the large numbers of Sri Lankan Tamils settled there, he said.
