HYDERABAD: The MCH took recourse to `compulsory acquisition' route to take over land from property owners near the flyover sites of Chandrayanagutta, Nalgonda crossroads, Punjagutta and Greenlands to expedite constructions. In a written reply to BJP floor leader B. Shyam Sunder during the last general body meeting, Additional Commissioner (Traffic & Transportation) N.V.S. Reddy said they had to take such an action as a "last resort" and only after "prolonged negotiations" with property owners. While one property was taken over after a prolonged legal battle in Chandrayanagutta, the process was on for two properties near the Begumpet railway station side and few others located on the stretch from NFCL junction to Punjagutta junction. The Ameerpet corporator sought reasons for delay in construction and the action being taken against the contractors. Absolving the contractors of any lapse, Mr. Reddy said the delays were on account of property acquisitions and litigation. Since compensation would be huge if compulsory acquisition route was followed in all cases, lot of effort initially went into "persuading" landowners to surrender their lands. "This strategy was needed to avoid confrontation later, which would have stalled the project itself," he said. The present delays in each case were for a few months only and negligible due to the difficulties faced in land acquisition, he said.
