Lorry crushes girl to death, driver held

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: A 10-year-old girl was crushed to death in a road accident at Saleemnagar in Malakpet on Friday.

Maria, a native of Maharashtra, came to the city along with her parents to attend a function at their relatives' house in Saleemnagar.

She was playing with other children on the roadside when a mini lorry loaded with vegetables knocked her down, resulting in grievous head injuries. The girl died on the spot. Other children, however, escaped unhurt. Enraged over this, residents assaulted lorry driver Jaleel and damaged vehicle's windshield.

They tried to set the lorry afire but the police intervened and persuaded the irate residents, stating that stringent action would be taken against Jaleel.

The police later registered a case of rash and negligent driving under Section 304 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and arrested Jaleel.
