Thiruvananthapuram: Work on the Rs.245.58-crore world-class international terminal complex of the Thiruvananthapuram airport is on in full swing. Piling work for the terminal building on the Chakka side has begun. The work on the Rs.165-crore first phase, which includes the Rs.115-crore terminal building, apron and car park, will be carried out round-the-clock. "To ensure that there is no delay owing to the monsoon, labourers will be put on three shifts. The international terminal will be completed by September 2008," Airport director K. Natarajan told The Hindu . The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has awarded the work to Chennai-based Consolidated Construction Consortium. The three-storeyed terminal building, with a floor area of 23,299 sq. m, has been designed using modern design concepts by a consortium of three companies. Basically of tubular structure of elliptical geometry, the building will be constructed using modern construction materials and will be covered with heat reflecting toughened glass. Mr. Natarajan said the entrance would be near the Bharat Tyres on the Chakka-Eenchakkal stretch of the NH 47 bypass. The approach road, to be constructed by the State, would be 170 metres long and 30 metres wide to facilitate six-lane traffic to the complex. A bridge would be constructed across the Parvathy Puthanar to connect the approach road. All modern facilities in world-class airports such as escalators, elevators and aerobridges would be provided. In addition, shops, lounges, restaurants, fire fighting and detection system, CCTV, surveillance CCTV system and flight information display system would be set up. The annual handling capacity of the new terminal would be 11.67 lakh when the first phase was commissioned and 13.2 lakh when the terminal complex was completed by 2010, Mr. Natarajan said. The parking lot, to be set up in front of the terminal, would be able to accommodate 575 cars. Four parking bays would be set up in the first phase at a cost of Rs.14.5 crore and the tendering process was on, said AGM S. Aboobacker who is in-charge of the project. In the Rs.80-crore second phase, extension of the terminal building by 50 m on both sides and construction of four parking bays would be taken up. "We hope to commence the second phase of the work by September 2008 and to complete it by 2010," Mr. Natarajan added. Of the 48.56 hectares needed for the project, the Government had handed over 11.15 hectares. Mr. Natarajan said the AAI would be able to take up the second phase only if the Government handed over the remaining land.
