Builders to stage dharna

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The Kerala Builders' Association (KBA) will organise a dharna at Thrikkakara on February 19 to protest against uncertainties over buildings in various stages of construction.

The association has also sought a new master plan for Kochi with a vision for the next 50 years and clearance of pending applications for approval.

President of the association M.D. Jairaj said at a press conference here that the construction industry was crippled by several problems. Some of the major problems had stemmed from the recent notification on floor-area ratio.

Even after detailed discussions with the authorities, no steps had been taken to solve the problems after the Kerala Municipal Building Rules were brought into effect in the Thrikkakara panchayat, said Mr. Jairaj.

He said the authorities should adopt a more creative and responsible approach, and the construction sector, being one of the largest employers, should be given industry status.
