The Holiday (English)
Director: Nancy Meyers Cast: Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Eli Wallach There is usually a rather recognisable line between overkill and underplay in romantic comedies, and usually it is easy to tell which side of the line a movie is. Not so with The Holiday. Directed by Nancy Meyers (Something's Gotta Give), this tale of two women with broken hearts who switch houses and literally switch lives begins on a great premise, and certainly brings a lot more to the table. However, uneven direction, writing and acting mar what could otherwise have been a truly memorable picture. If the film had stayed on the love story of Iris (Kate Winslet), an unlucky-in-love journalist who finally trades up to movie composer Miles (Jack Black, hard though it may be to believe), it might have been really good. Both Winslet and Black share a wonderful chemistry together.
