GREAT IMPACT: The mangled vehicle after the collision on Pune-Bangalore highway on Saturday.
Belgaum: Four persons died on the spot and another seriously injured in a collision involving a sports utility vehicle and tipper near Halga on Pune-Bangalore Express Highway (NH 4) on Saturday morning. The deceased have been identified as V. Thimmarayappa (50), Nagaraj Chikkapaiah (45), Laxmanrao (55) and Krishnamurthy (58). Sridhar, who was seriously injured, has been admitted to KLES Hospital in the city. All the victims are from Bangalore. The accident occurred when they were returning from Shirdi in Maharashtra. According to Rural Police, the two vehicles collided on the road where construction work was under way. The police identified Thimmarayappa from the identity card found in his pocket. He was employed in the Health Department, attached to the National Leprosy Eradication Programme in Bangalore. The police contacted the NLEP officials. A team from NLEP is expected to reach here by late Saturday. The police have registered a case and are investigating.
