``Let Pakistan show it in deed''

New Delhi: India on Saturday said a solution to the Siachen issue would require "action on the ground" by Pakistan.

"Statements are not enough, action is needed on the ground," Defence Minister A.K. Antony said when asked about a Pakistani media report saying that Islamabad had assured New Delhi that its troops would not occupy Siachen heights if demilitarisation was carried out there.

Ties on the upswing

The Defence Minister said relations with Pakistan are on the upswing saying it was a "concious effort" on the part of New Delhi to boost ties with two of its close neighbours — Islamabad and Beijing.

Mr. Antony's remarks came in the wake of Pakistani media reports which claimed that an agreement on Siachen appeared "imminent.'' On media reports from Islamabad suggesting that proposed acquisition by India of 126 fighter aircraft would generate an arms race in the region, he said armament purchases by India are not intended to confront anybody. — PTI
