Elected to ICAI Central Council

Bangalore: K. Raghu, a chartered accountant from Bangalore, has been elected to the Central Council of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India for the term 2007-10. He is the fifth person from Karnataka to be elected to the council. — Staff Reporter

Events put off because of bandh

Bangalore: All the cases that were scheduled to be heard on Monday by the Karnataka Information Commission have been put off to January 17 in view of the Karnataka bandh, according to a press release. Examinations for the recruitment of KSRTC drivers scheduled to be held on Monday have been put off to January 27.

Family of four commits suicide

BHADRAVATI: Four members of a family committed suicide here on Friday night.

According to the police Krishnamurthy, 42, a cable TV operator; his wife, Asha, 30; their son, Dheeraj, 5; and daughter, Deeksha, 9, drowned in the Bhadra river.

A suicide note left by Krishnamurthy said they consumed poison first and when the poison did not work they decided to jump into the river. The bodies of Asha and Dheeraj have been recovered and the search for the bodies of Krishnamurthy and Deeksha is on.

Krishnamurthy, a resident of Jannapur locality, was said to be well off. The reason for the suicide is not known. Krishnamurthy left the suicide note, a notebook, a mobile phone and a bunch of keys at his relative's house. — Special Correspondent

Jewellery show from February 16 to 18

Bangalore: The South India Jewellery Show 2007 will be on from February 16 to 18 at Kanteerava Indoor Stadium as a business-to-business event dealing with gems, jewellery and allied products.

The trade magazine Art of Jewellery, in association with the World Gold Council and Gitanjali Group and supported by the All-India Gems and Jewellery Federation and other trade bodies are organising the event.

CPI (M) plea

MYSORE: The Communist Party of India (Marxists) has urged the State Government to file a review petition to the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal. In a release here on Saturday, secretary of the party's district unit N.S. Prabhakar said that the Government should take legal action to get its rightful share of water.

Zoo to remain closed

HUBLI: The Hubli Police on Thursday raided a video parlour at Hirepet in Old Hubli and seized 43 pornographic CDs worth Rs. 3,300. Shanmukh J. Kalburgi and Mohammed Salim Mohammedsab were arrested. A case has been registered in the Old Hubli Police Station.
