Repoll in 11 stations on Monday

Correspondent

IMPHAL: Repolling will be held on Monday in 11 stations, two in Thoubal district and nine in Senapati, Manipur's Chief Electoral Officer R.R. Rashmi said on Saturday.

Polling could not be held there, during Thursday's first phase of the Assembly elections in 19 constituencies, owing to group clashes and technical snags in electronic voting machines.

The second phase of polling in 29 constituencies will be held on Wednesday. Congress president Sonia Gandhi is addressing a public meeting in Temenglong district on Sunday.

As for the allegations of rigging and booth capturing in Senapati district, lodged by some candidates including Power Minister Franchis Ngajokpa of the Congress, Mr. Rashmi said the Election Commission was looking into the allegations. Documents and reports were being sought from the presiding officer and other officials.

On Friday night, a hand grenade was thrown into the house of Oinam Bijoy a worker of Pheiroijam Parijat, Food and Civil Supplies Minister and CPI candidate in Lamlai.

It is said two youths came to Bijoy's house and asked him to pull down the CPI flag. When he declined to do so, the grenade was hurled.

Some other workers had been given live bullets with the message that if they did not stop working for Mr. Parijat they would be killed. Another worker was kidnapped.

There have been increasing reports of armed persons beating up workers of Congress and CPI candidates. The two parties are ruling coalition partners.

Following the attacks, the election offices of several candidates remain deserted.
