Milma agents postpone strike

KOZHIKODE : Milma, Kerala Milk Marketing Federation, will impose the recent hike announced in the price of milk in the Malabar region from February 15, chairman P.P. Gopinatha Pillai has said.

The price of Milma milk was hiked from Rs.15 a litre to Rs.16, through a Government notification recently. Mr. Pillai said the hike was not being introduced in the Malabar region as the polythene sachets with the increased price of Rs.16, printed on it were yet to arrive here from Hyderabad.

The milk has to be packed in polythene sachets and freezed a day before distribution, it is pointed out.

Meanwhile, the proposed strike from February 11 by the Kerala Milma Agents Association was postponed. The decision was taken following a meeting to be held on February 13, to discuss the rate of payment of commission to agents.

The agents were demanding a rise in the commission paid to them consequent to the rise in the price of milk by Rs.1 a litre, sources said.

Hike to help farmers

Staff Reporter writes from Palakkad: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said the price of milk was hiked by Rs.1 per litre to help the dairy farmers to encourage them to produce more milk to make the State self-reliant in milk and milk products.

Inaugurating the district diary festival at Peruvambu near here on Sunday, the Chief Minister said that Kerala was depending on other States for its milk, egg and meat requirements. This could be produced by farmers in the State to meet the local demand.

Minister for Civil Supplies and Diary Development C. Divakaran said the aim of the Government was to make the State self-sufficient in diary products.

The meeting was addressed by V. Chenthamarakshan and K. Achuthan, MLAs.

At another function, the Chief Minister inaugurated the new building of Devashrayam Charitable Society at Marutharode.
