THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The governing committee of the Ongallur grama panchayat in Pattambi, Palakkad district, has bagged the first prize of Rs.2 crore in the Kerala State Sports Lottery. The draw of lots was held at the Manacaud Government Girls Vocational Higher Secondary School here on Saturday. The prize-winning ticket was purchased by the governing committee members and staff of the UDF-held panchayat. Youth Congress members staged a protest at the venue against the Government decision to reduce the number and amount of prizes. Soon after the first prize was declared, the youth activists shouted slogans to register their protest. The draw has held by a 10-member committee headed by V.Surendran Pillai, MLA. Minister for Sports M. Vijayakumar and sportsperson Padmini Thomas were present. The collection from sale of the sports lottery tickets was Rs.29.44 crore, against a target of Rs.200 crore. The Government had reduced the number of prizes to compensate for the fall in collection. Ongallur panchayat president P.K. Unnikrishnan said the money would be used for local area development.
